What It Does

Federal law prohibits nearly all people with felony convictions from having guns, but many stalking crimes are misdemeanors — meaning that, under federal law, some stalkers may legally be armed after a conviction. States can act to cover stalkers either by making these convictions into felonies or else by extending their gun laws to reach specified misdemeanors. The Impact

Attempted murders of women are often preceded by stalking incidents: In one study, in nearly nine out of 10 cases there had been a stalking incident in the year leading up to the attempted murder.
