What It Does

Federal law sets a dangerously low minimum age for buying firearms, allowing some handgun purchases for 18-year-olds and some rifle and shotgun purchases even for young children. Many states have raised the age, barring handgun sales to people under 21 and long gun sales to people under 18. The strongest policies generally bar all purchases before a person turns 21.

The Impact

Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens, and the firearm suicide rate among young people has spiked 59% in the last decade. People ages 18 to 20 commit 18% of all gun homicides, while making up only 4% of the US population.
