What It Does
For decades, gun manufacturers have refused to build basic childproofing features into their products—and have had a unique exemption from federal product safety oversight. A few states have acted to fill this gap, requiring new handgun models sold in the state to include technology that protects children. Critical innovations include loaded chamber indicators and magazine safety disconnects. No state currently requires authorized-use (or “smart gun”) technology. The Impact
More than 4.6 million American children live in a house with at least one unlocked and loaded firearm.
